Overview

The Chasing Einstein Challenge is a 9-week activity for 3rd-12th grade students designed to help them become creative and persistent problem solvers. The Chasing Einstein Challenge focuses on building a math mindset by having students work on unique math challenges, interacting with math mentors, and reflecting on their learning.

History

Dr. Kevin Smith created the Chasing Einstein Challenge in the fall of 2017 as a way to introduce his college students to the concept of gamification and strategies for engaging students. Brandi Antonsen Fiegen was a student in that class. Since that time, the Chasing Einstein has evolved and improved. Thus far more than 190 preservice teachers and 400 5th through 8th grade students have participated. View a timeline of how the Chasing Einstein Challenge has evolved over the years.

Research

In 2019, Kevin and Brandi conducted a research study to measure the impact of the Chasing Einstein Challenge on students' mathematical mindset. A summary and results of that study can be found here.
